Client: UK University

Summary of Services: Fire Extinguisher Maintenance

Contract Start/End: 2004 – Ongoing

Location: South East

UK Sites Serviced: 1  (1200+ extinguishers across several campus buildings)

The Challenge

In 2004, the Facilities Manager of a large university approached AGF Fire Protection Ltd to tender for their annual fire extinguisher maintenance.

The university was facing two major issues:

  • High replacement costs: Their existing provider did not carry out test discharges or extended servicing and instead pushed full unit replacements unnecessarily.

  • Tampering and misuse: Extinguishers were frequently tampered with by students, resulting in costly callouts and frequent refills.

As a large educational institution, the client also needed a provider who could complete all servicing during school holidays with minimal disruption to daily operations.

Our Solution

Upon winning the contract, AGF Fire implemented a smarter, cost-saving approach:

  • Full Asset Register & CAD Updates
We created a detailed asset list of all extinguishers and updated CAD drawings to include precise extinguisher locations—benefiting both the client’s records and our technicians' efficiency.

  • Extended Servicing Instead of Replacement
AGF’s policy is to keep extinguishers in service for as long as they remain fully functional. We carried out extended servicing at 5- or 10-year intervals, avoiding the need for unnecessary replacements—delivering significant cost savings over time.

  • Anti-Tamper Solutions
To reduce tampering, we installed extinguisher cabinets and protective covers in high-traffic areas. We also helped the client build a small on-site surplus of extinguishers to enable batch refills, ensuring uninterrupted coverage while further reducing callout costs.

  • Education-Specific Scheduling
Understanding the academic calendar, our admin team ensured all work was scheduled during school holidays. All AGF technicians assigned to the site held enhanced DBS checks, in line with safeguarding standards.

The Results

  • Substantial cost savings through extended servicing instead of replacements

  • Improved asset tracking and visibility with updated CAD records

  • Reduced callouts and tampering incidents through protective measures and surplus management

  • Zero disruption to campus activities due to flexible, holiday-based scheduling

  • Long-term partnership—contract renewed year after year due to consistent quality and transparent, all-inclusive pricing

Client Impact

By partnering with AGF Fire Protection Ltd, the university gained a reliable, cost-effective fire safety solution tailored to the unique challenges of an educational environment.
